Bhamo

The town stretches eastward, following the flow of the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River. Bhamo has been historically a significant overland gateway to China, a trading post and the point of entry for the British when they annexed the country to India.

It is an atmospheric trading town, and the start point for boat journeys on the Upper Ayeyarwaddy River to Mandalay or Myitkyina. Sight around town include the remains of an ancient Shan capital, wooden colonial buildings, a bamboo bridge, old Baptist and Catholic churches and a lively market frequented by Chinese, Shan and Kachin people.
