UBEIN BRIDGE

At 1,3km, Ubein bridge stands as the world’s longest bridge made of the increasingly rare teakwood. Over two centuries old, the bridge was built by the Governor Ubein of Amarapura from teak wood salvaged from the remains of the deserted Sagaing palace. Teak, with its dense layers and natural mildew and pest repellent properties, is one of only types of wood able to withstand hundreds of years’ submergence in water. It is one of the most popular sites for photography in the country and is best appreciated from a row boat during the breathtaking sunsets that seem to bless the shores of the lake always. Even the monks, nuns and local denizens come often to the bridge to admire the view and socialise, never tiring of its beauty.
